The best water bottles with a straw

The Owala FreeSip is the best of the best water bottles with straw lids for most people, because its straw shares a lid with a chug spout and a lock. For the car, the Stanley IceFlow's flip straw fits the job better.

Questions this page answers

Straw, chug or sip lid?

A straw suits anyone who sips while doing something else: typing, driving, reading. A chug cap suits big drinks after exercise. The Owala does both, which is why it tops this page.

Will the lid get moldy, and can I clean it?

Straws are the wettest part of any bottle. Pull the straw daily if it comes out, push a thin brush through it weekly and let it dry apart from the lid.

Will it leak in my bag?

A straw lid needs a lock to be bag safe. The Owala has one, the Funtainer is leak proof when closed per Thermos, and the Stanley is only leak resistant.

What to know

Why a straw suits a desk

You do not tip your head back, so you sip without stopping what you are doing. That is the whole reason straw lids sell to office workers and drivers. It also keeps your nose out of the lid and your teeth off the steel.

A day with a straw lid

A straw lid earns its keep in small moments: a sip between emails, a sip at a red light, a sip on a call, none of them needing the bottle tipped up or the cap unscrewed and set down somewhere it can roll off the desk. The price shows up once a week at the sink. That is when the straw and the channel above it need a brush, so the people who stay happy with straw lids are usually the ones who keep a thin brush next to the dish soap.

Three kinds of straw lid

Built-in, like the Owala's: the straw is part of the spout. Flip, like the Stanley's: it folds down under a cover and seals when it snaps shut. Pop-up, like the Funtainer's: it rises when you press the button and hides under a cover. Each type cleans differently, so look at how the straw comes out before you buy.

What goes wrong

A straw adds a channel that stays wet, and sugary drinks make it worse. Mold usually shows up as dark specks at the bottom of the straw or inside the mouthpiece, and the fix is a thin brush and a soak. A four-pack of Funtainer straws appeared in our scan, and a third-party straw lid for wide mouth bottles was about $9.

Hot drinks and straws

Skip them. CleverHiker says to keep hot drinks out of the Hydro Flask straw lid, and Owala and Simple Modern rule out hot drinks entirely. Hot liquid through a straw arrives fast and all at once.

Straws and cold

An open straw lets a little warm air in each time you drink, so a straw lid gives up some cold time compared with a closed screw cap. The maker hour claims are measured shut. For ice that has to last into the evening, close the cover between sips.

The filter straw

The LifeStraw Go is a straw bottle with a filter in the line. Water passes through the filter on its way up, so it takes more pull than a plain straw. In return, hotel sink water tastes like water. Its carbon stage lasts about two months of daily use, and the membrane lasts years.

Picking by place

Desk: the Owala, because the straw side is slow and steady and the lid locks for the ride home. Car: the Stanley, with its handle and a straw you flip with one finger. School: the Funtainer, sized for small hands. Travel: the LifeStraw, for taps you do not trust.

More questions

Do straw lid bottles leak?

Some do. Look for a lock or a closed-lid leak claim. The Owala locks with its loop, while the Stanley is only rated leak resistant.

How do I clean a water bottle straw?

Pull it out if it comes out, push a thin brush through with warm soapy water, rinse and let it air dry apart from the lid. Do it weekly, and the same day after juice.

Can I replace the straw?

Usually. A four-pack of Funtainer straws showed up in our scan, and wide mouth bottles take third-party straw lids around $9.

Are straw bottles good for kids?

Yes, if the straw is covered and the lid opens with one press. That is the Thermos Funtainer's design.

Straw or chug cap?

Straw for steady sipping at a desk or in a car, chug for big drinks after exercise. The Owala FreeSip gives you both.

Does a straw make ice melt faster?

A little, because the straw lets air in as you drink. Close the cover between sips and the difference is small.

Which straw bottle fits a car cup holder?

The Stanley IceFlow is built for it, with a 3.76 in base. The LifeStraw Go is narrower still at 2.64 in.
